Participants' Journal Entries (8th June, Friday)

I am so excited today. We are going to do paper cutting again. We will also be having barbeque tonight!!! Wow! I am as happy as a lark but the thought of leaving my buddy and the school saddens me.

Jie Qin

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I got the autographs of all my classmates today. I feel sad to leave them especially my buddy as I may not see them again.

Farkhanda

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
So sad! Today is the last day with my buddy. I can’t bear to leave her. I can still remember the day her father drove us back to school after the home stay. In the car, my buddy’s sister hugged me and refused to let me get off the car. At last, I got off the car. She cried. Her name is Mandy. She is very adorable. I will miss her.

Ada Soh

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Good news! I’m going home! I will get to see my parents in two days’ time. I can’t wait to go home. I’m sure my mother will be happy. I am going to give my parents the presents that I bought for them.

Jie Sheng

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I can’t wait to go home. I am homesick. I miss my family. How I wish I am on my way back to Singapore now.

Jonathan

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I miss my mother very much and I hope my buddy will not forget me.

Yi Jie

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I feel good that I will be going back to Singapore but I also feel bad as I will miss my new friends and their smiles. I really wish that I can go to my buddy’s house for home stay again.

We had a barbeque tonight. It was enjoyable. The food was tasty. I’m sad that I will be leaving this place soon. I will have to pack my luggage and get ready for home.

Participants' Journal Entries (7th June, Thursday)

I visited ‘Liang Yuan’ (the old house of a family with the surname ‘Liang’ in the old days ) and ‘Zu Miao’ (Ancestral Temple) today. It was fun! I learnt about the Chinese culture and how the Chinese lived in the past.

Chang Hwan

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Today, we still had lessons in the morning. In the afternoon, we had a half-day tour. From the tour, I discovered that Huang Feihong, the hero of Foshan, had four wives.

Su Ning

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
My class enjoyed the music lesson today. The music lesson is conducted in Chinese. We listened to ‘ting mama de hua’ by Jay Chou. He is my idol.

Guangzhi

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I learnt more about ‘Huang Feihong’ at the Ancestral Temple during the tour. He had four wives and he died of illness.

Han Jie

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Today, we went on a tour again. It was really fun! I found out that all tour guides are very friendly and nice. When I asked my tour guide to lend me her flag, she lent it to me without hesitation. Wow! So I played with the flag and pretended to lead the tour group.

Glenn

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I went to the temple today. I did not manage to find the chewing gums or bubble gums that I wanted so I bought a snack. There were beggars outside the temple. I thought beggars should be walking slowly, unlike energetic children. I did not give them any money. I don’t think they need it.

Wei Song

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I wanted to buy the mouthwatering ‘dragonbeard sweet’ but it was out of stock. So unlucky! My family will surely be disappointed as they won’t get to taste it. L

Jia Jun

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
My teacher, Mdm Jin, conducted a psychology lesson for us today. We played ‘a mute and a blind man’ game. I was the blind man and my buddy was the mute. We were the guinea pigs and we needed to crawl under the tables and walk on chairs. In the end, I bumped into many things. Many people laughed including myself. I have learnt that we should care for the blind.

Zhi Yong

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
We watched a movie ‘Hua Mu Lan’ tonight. It was funny but a little scary. After the movie appreciation, I went to the canteen for supper. It was delicious and nice.

Adeline

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Over here, the English lesson is some times conducted in Chinese. It is a mixture of English and Chinese. It is different from our English class in Singapore.

Miss Ng, those reflections and those games

3 of us have been spending our nights going through our pupils' reflections. Miss Hing especially has been burning the midnight oil to amend and type out the reflections so that we can post them on the blog. Hope her panda eyes recover when we go back next week. I think she 's going to lose weight in this trip (don't need to go to Marie france, haha!).

Guess me and Mr Ho are more sportive. We have established a very good bonding with teachers here through ball games like basketball and badminton. But i prefer to play with pupils (due to my standard, hehe...). I had a basketball game with our pupils yesterday. Wah, Glenn Tan was very swift in his action, Chang Kwan kept grabbing the ball from me...

Millions of thanks to Miss Xiao Wei. She has been of great help to us all this while in blog construction and maintainence. Really, we are lucky to have such colleague who's willing to spend time for extra work during holiday. Thanks Xiao Wei!

Participants' Journal Entries (6th June, Wednesday)

I think all our hard work and effort put into preparing for the performance paid off quite well. Generally, I would say that we enjoyed it. Hooray! The games were interesting. My cute little P4, nine-year-old friend was there too. We have arranged a time for her to write an autograph for me tomorrow. Daddy, Mummy, Spottie and so on…, I will be back in four days’ time. Yippee!!!

Yee Shuin

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Today, our English lesson was conducted by a new American teacher. He is more handsome than Mr Ho. We used our English textbooks for the first time. There were comics in the books. I raised my hands to read the dialogue aloud. The teacher was surprised. He praised me and said that I was very brave. I really love English class.

Dong Hee

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Today was an exciting and embarrassing day for me! There was a special performance. Luo Meng, Glenn, Brendan and I had to do a presentation on Singapore (culture, costumes, food and places of interest) to the Shimen students. Then, we sang ‘Top of the World’ and ‘Rasa Sayang’. I had to scream as the other students’ voices were not as loud. After that, Jie Sheng, Brendan, Glenn and I performed Wushu. I made a mistake when turning. It was embarrassing. That was indeed a memorable experience.

Yu Jia

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
We had a special performance put up by us as well as the Shimen students today. We sang two songs, ‘Top of the World’ and ‘Rasa Sayang’. We also put up a Malay dance item. It was quite messy though but I just laughed it out. J I enjoyed the Latin Dance put up by Shimen students most.

Farhanah

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Despite being nervous, I did wushu for the performance. It was extremely enjoyable. I wish I would experience something like that again.

Brendan

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I had a lesson on Chinese history and literature. I have learnt some good phrases from a Tang poem (from Tang dynasty).

Jing Chao

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Yahoo!!! The performance was over! What a relief! Even though I miss my parents, I do not wish to go back. I mean I do not want to leave my buddy here in China. I will miss her always.

Participants' Journal Entries (5th June, Tuesday)

The Chinese Painting lesson was fun! We drew bamboo and birds. I saw my previous painting on the display board. The teacher added another goldfish and water to it. Boohoo… no plants! But it is still very beautiful. We rehearsed our performance items (Malay dance and songs) for tomorrow’s special event. It was certainly fun. We made mistakes but we soon solved it. I miss Spottie (my dog) , Mummy and Daddy…

Yee Shuin

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I went for Chinese Painting today and it was fun. I saw my fish painting on the display board and I was happy.

Tee Tiong

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I had PE lesson today. The Chinese students are generally healthier and stronger as compared to us. When we ran, they were so fast. Sigh! I was the last one.

Participants' Journal Entries (4th June, Monday)

I am back to school today. I feel very sad and want to cry. :-(
I miss my buddy’s parents. I want to play with her younger sister again.

The seahorse soup that I drank was very sweet and fishy. It looked funny. I tried to drink without smelling the soup.

Jing Chao

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I went to Guangzhou for a tour today. It is about Chinese History and I like History. I took photographs of all the ancient antiques. They were so interesting and they must have cost a fortune! Wow! How I wish the curator will share more.

Jia Jun

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Today, I visited a museum and learnt a lot about Chinese history and culture. After that, we went shopping for an hour. It was quite a rush. Guess what? While shopping, we saw a little boy peeing in public. It was quite embarrassing.

Farhanah

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It was fun learning about China in the museum. Most things were made of wood. How I love the woody smell! There is one special thing I learnt about the gigantic door. We are not supposed to step on the wooden platform at the doorway as this is disrespectful to the two Chinese Gods guarding it. This is interesting!

Dong Ho

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I love shopping! One hour is not enough. I'm going to ask my teacher to extend the shopping duration and take us to a place where we can bargain.

Farkhanda

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Today, the tour was amazing! Even though I did not bring a camera, I managed to draw the things that were nice in my sketchbook. As you know, I like to draw. When we went shopping, I bought something for my sister. After that, Miss Hing bought us ice cream. Cool! But when our teammates, the girls, kept shopping, we boys almost died. Hmmm… why do girls like shopping?

May i say something about them?...by Miss Ng

i would like to comment on few pupils here.

First, Jie Sheng, who had been sick (caused by very serious homesick) for the first few days in Shimen. His homesick actually made all of us worried as he lost his appetitite, not showing interest on activities. However, before he went for the home stay, he promised 3 of us that he would take good care of himself (taking medicine on time, not to cry when he missed home). We were a bit worried about him during the first day of the home stay) On the second night, we received his call. We were relieved when he told us that he was doing fine and he s enjoying himself in his buddy's house! He even cooked for the family (actually it was only fried eggs) At that moment, i know Jie Sheng has grow stronger! 3 cheers for Jie Sheng!

Second, Farkhanda and Farhanah. Despite the food problem (they are Muslim), both of them have showed great enthusiasm for this trip. The food issue does not affect their mood for learning and enjoying this trip. They did many funny things during the home stay, and their sharing was full of laughter.

Also, from the sharing session on the home stay, we also get to discover some pupils "hidden" strengths. For example, Zhi Yong has got the potential to become a hero. He tried to save a kid in a swimming pool but in the end he had to take his dinner in a restaurant half-naked; SuNing shaked her hands when she was invited to eat snake! She swallowed it in the end. Guess this is the bravest act she has ever done in her life so far. Haha!

These experiences are definitely very unforgettable for our pupils, as well as for 3 of us.

My thoughts...Mr HO

It has been a week since we left Changi Airport to come over to Shimen to learn more about them. It is heartening to see all students becoming more mature over such a short time. They learned to take care of themselves and accomodate each other. All of them miss home but they know they don't want their parents to worry about them. They called home and told their parents they are ok and enjoying themselves. They promised to enjoy themselves and they did. I would like to comment all our participants for that. Well done!

Thoughts from Miss Hing......( 3 June & 4 June)

3 June 2007

It was a nice break for us, the three teachers, during our students’ 4-day/3-night home stay though we are always on stand-by with our mobile phones and contact list of our students (just in case…). To all who are reading this blog, no worries, our hearts are with the students. We are concerned about their wellbeing and did what we could to ensure that things went well e.g. checking with the hosting family, calling our students, messaging/calling the respective parents when the need arises. Glad it turned out well.

As the saying goes… “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. We managed to keep ourselves busy with activities. Guess what? Besides sight-seeing, we went water rafting with the teachers of Shimen… screaming our lungs out! It was really EXCITING; an eye-opener for us.

How time flies! In a twinkling of an eye, the home stay had come to an end and now our students are with us. Though it was only a short four-day home stay, their experiences have taught them to be strong and independent. It is nice to see how they grow and glow.

Note : Just to let you know that I am the official photographer for this trip.
Hmmm… give me a thumb-up if you like the photographs yah.

4 June 2007

All of us (Keming teachers & students) went on a day tour to Guangzhou today. It was pretty enriching with the visits to the museum and ‘Chen Jia Ci’ Ancestral Hall. Not only have we learnt more about the history of China, we learnt to appreciate it as well as the culture. After that, our students went shopping… probably the girls enjoyed it more than the boys. Well, that’s life, isn’t it? Do take a look at our photographs.
I will never ever forget the home stay. I hope there is still one more day.

During the home stay, my buddy’s family took me to the cinema to watch a movie. We even went for karaoke. I danced for them.

Jiesheng

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I visited my buddy’s father’s factory today. He wanted to study a rock that had been buried underground for 5000 years. He asked his workers to craft it out into an expensive object. This is amazing!

Hanjie

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Today, we went to a lot of places. We went to the Sunflower Park. It was tiring… we went up and down, up and down, up and down… Then we went hiking up a mountain. We took a cable car up and took a bus down. Ha ha ha! J

Farkhanda

I wanted to climb a huge and tall mountain with my buddy’s family but I was not feeling well and I vomited in the car. Because of me, the whole family could not climb the mountain. I felt sorry for them.

Today is Children’s Day in China. My buddy’s parents took my buddy and I back to their hometown. We swam, caught fishes and had great fun there.

I learnt Chinese brush painting today. It is not easy. The challenge is to control the flow of ink and colours at the tip of the brush. My teacher taught me how to draw fish and panda. It was such a tiring day. We went to visit schools today. The buildings are awesome and they are very, very BIG! During dinner, Farkhanda and I learnt to eat with disposable chopsticks. Farkharda was so funny because she only used a chopstick to bring the food to her mouth. We could not help laughing.

Farhanah

Today, we had lessons on Music, Chinese and English. I enjoyed the Music lesson. We played a song and danced to the beat. The English lesson was interesting too. Hmmm…as for Chinese… erm… I had problems understanding it so I kind of slept there. Oophs! I know this is not right. I promise to be 100% attentive from now onwards and get the best out of the lessons.

When I was at the airport today with my beloved family, I almost cried. My eyes were dreadfully red when I checked in. I almost lost my watch on the plane while I was doing ‘big business’. Well, doing ‘big business’ on the plane was really uncomfortable.

Glenn, Yi Han

This is the first time I took the aeroplane. It was unbelievable that I was actually traveling to a distant country without my parents. It was fun sitting with Adeline and Zhi Yong on the plane. The taking off and landing of the plane made my head spin. I miss my dog, Spottie, mother and family. I almost cried.

Home stay...by Miss Ng

Today the 26 pupils finally were fetched to their buddies' house. i can see the excitement on their faces. Three of us met some buddies' parents, and we are glad that all of them are very friendly and happy about the home stay school arranged for them. i believe that they are many interesting programms awaiting our 26 pupils.

Mr.Ho, Miss Hing and me myself went through all pupils learning log (journal) last night. Most of them reflected that they are getting used to the environment here. they have also learnt many new things through the classroom learning. We are posting some of our pupils journal entries on the blog, please spend some time reading through the entries to understand how our pupils are doing, are feeling and are learning.

Parents, please do not worry about them. they are coping well, we are sure that they are going to have a fruitful trip in Shimen.

Our thoughts...by Miss Hing

Hi there c”,)

It is heartening to know that our students are coping pretty well in Shimen despite the ‘miss home syndrome’ and the differences in the curriculum, culture (for Malay students), environment and life styles. They have learnt to be more independent and are able to do things on their own. Generally, they are quite well-behaved. Guess what? Some of them actually touched the three of us, the teachers-in-charge, with their sensibility especially when they comforted or cheered up their friends who missed home.

Of course, learning is not without struggles. All the students had to adjust to their new hostel life. There were times when a few of them could not see eye to eye and were upset with one another. It was only after our counselling that they got to see things from a new perspective. This is really a good opportunity for them to learn about respect and how to better relate to others. It is nice to know to know that they are receptive to advice and are willing to change for the better.

No worries. We are fine in China. The students are well taken care of. Do follow up with our blog yah!

Regards,
Miss Hing :)

My buddy is a kind, helpful and generous girl. She teaches me all the things that I do not know. In class, the teacher got me to try some challenging Math questions and she explained to me again when I had difficulty understanding the concepts.

I was very tired on the first night. I did not sleep well because it was warm at night and there were mosquitoes. I had a few mosquito bites.

If there is a chance, you should come to China for holidays. China’s great! But please do not come here when it is hot. I know that my parents are worried about me because this is the first time I join the school on a two-week immersion programme without them. Shimen is great but I think the food is not suitable for me. I still prefer Singapore food. The teachers are nice to us.

I have been given a lot of food in Shimen and I am still learning to get use to it. I am fine as my friends are always with me. I love the hostel very much but I am afraid to use the toilet. It’s different from the toilets in Singapore. Once, my sister dropped her pin into the hole (the squatting kind). She is very unlucky. Haha! In Shimen, the lessons are conducted in Chinese. Even though I learn Chinese in Keming, I had difficulty following the lesson as I do not really understand what my teacher was saying.

Even though I have never left my parents for more than one week, I have learnt to be independent. The school is very generous. We are well fed with lots and lots of food as if we do not have to eat anymore. :)

Our learning journey....Miss Ng H L

This is our fourth day here. We would like to apologize for not being able to update the blog immediately due to the network problem here. As the transport in this area is not as convenient as in Singapore, we are not able to get the phone cards ready for pupils until today. We hope for parents' understanding.

I guess most of the pupils are having fun in shimen primary School although some of them are homesick, and some of them are not used to the hostel life (first few days) But this is an expected situation. i believe this is where and when our singapore pupils can and should learn to be independent. They start to realize that they cannot take things for granted. They are also learning how to manage their emotions by themselves. They are growing stronger each day.

We are finally at Shimen by Mr Ho

After more than 5 months of preparation,we are finally here at Shimen. It's summer and the weather is almost similar to what we are experiencing in Singapore. We are all amazed by how big the school is. Everyone is very excited. We are expecting a very fruitful trip. For now, good bye and hear from me soon!

Teacher's Reflection

Hurrah! We are going to shimen soon..

too soon actually.

as a matter of fact, the exam fever has yet to subside and most of us are still in midst of marking the papers frantically.
